Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Rochester, NY) - The Pawtucket Red Sox were unable to scratch the scoreboard against Rochester Red Wings pitching, dropping the series finale, 5-0, to snap their seven-game winning streak on Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field.
Pawtucket (9-6) concluded its three-city road trip with a record of 7-1, matching its best eight-game trip in franchise history. The PawSox had not dropped a road game since August.
Rochester starter Jose Berrios (2-0), the top pitching prospect in the Twins organization, cooled off the Pawtucket offense and lowered his ERA to 1.06. He allowed three baserunners (two singles and a walk) in 7.0 innings of work, while striking out seven.
Berrios retired 13 straight PawSox batters before finally allowing his first hit of the game to Jantzen Witte with nobody out in the sixth inning. Sean Coyle followed with a single but Rusney Castillo grounded into an inning-ending double play to halt Pawtucket's only offensive threat of the first eight innings.
Relievers Brandon Kitzler and Taylor Rodgers closed out the final two innings of the game for the Red Wings (5-9).
Marco Hernandez and Castillo delivered one-out singles in the ninth, but Blake Swihart grounded into a game-ending double play against Rodgers.
Brian Johnson (1-2) made the start for the PawSox, allowing only three hits and three runs in 5.0 innings pitched.
However, only one of the three runs was earned, as Pawtucket's defensive miscues in the third inning led to the first two runs for Rochester.
With one out and two runners in scoring position, Kennys Vargas grounded a ball to third baseman Janzten Witte, but his throw home was too low for Swihart to handle and Wilfredo Tovar scored the game's first run. On the next play, Adam Walker popped out to shortstop Marco Hernandez, but his throw behind the runner at third base was wide of the mark, allowing the Red Wings to tack on another run.
Rochester scored a run in the fourth inning following a Darin Mastroianni triple, in the seventh on a Vargas RBI double against Anthony Varvaro and in the eighth on a John Hicks home run (1) against Pat Light.
With the loss, Pawtucket fell into a temporary first-place tie with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the International League North.
The PawSox will return to McCoy stadium tomorrow evening, opening up a five-game homestand at 6:15 pm against Lehigh Valley. Pawtucket lefthander Roenis Elias (0-1, 3.86) is scheduled to make the start against IronPigs righthander Zach Eflin (2-0, 0.64).
