Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 10-2 in the final game of a five-game series on Thursday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Lehigh Valley scored eight unanswered runs from innings three through five in the win.
Syracuse (6-8) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. A Trea Turner walk preceded a Brendan Ryan single, with Turner eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Scott Sizemore, handing the Chiefs a 1-0 lead at the end of one inning.
Lehigh Valley (8-6) knotted things up in the top of the third. Starting pitcher Adam Morgan kicked off the inning with a line-drive double into left field off pitcher A.J. Cole. The next batter, Darnell Sweeney, singled Morgan home, tying the game at one.
In the top of the fourth, Lehigh Valley picked up three more runs on three hits. Right fielder Cedric Hunter opened the inning with a single through the hole on the right side. Will Venable followed with a single of his own into center. After the Venable single, Ryan Jackson doubled to right, scoring Hunter. A groundout later brought home Venable, with a wild pitch scoring Jackson later in the inning.
The Iron Pigs batted in four more runs in the fifth. First baseman Tommy Joseph hit his second home run of the season, with RBI doubles from Venable and Jackson later in the inning, putting Lehigh Valley up 8-1. Cole ended his afternoon after four and two-thirds innings, surrendering 8 earned runs on 12 hits.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the sixth from second baseman Scott Sizemore and third baseman Jason Martinson put the Chiefs back on the board. Syracuse tallied one run in the frame off Iron Pigs southpaw starter Adam Morgan. He wrapped up his night an inning later, finishing with two earned runs on five hits and six strikeouts over seven innings.
Lehigh Valley answered back with two more runs in the top of the eighth. With runners on second and third, Taylor Featherson singled into left off pitcher Sam Runion, scoring Ryan Jackson. Alfredo Marte crossed the plate later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from center fielder Nick Williams, handing Lehigh Valley a 10-2 lead that held the rest of the way.
The Chiefs are back in play Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium for a three game series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. First pitch is at 6:35. Syracuse's Taylor Hill is set to take the mound against Scranton Wilkes-Barre's Chad Green.
