Titans Offensive Attack Continues; Blitz Elmira 8-2
March 24, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Trenton Titans continued to light up the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon, as the proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers built a snowman on the First Arena scoreboard with an 8-2 win over the Jackals (38-24-3-483 points).
Including a sweep (5-2 and 7-1) of Wheeling this weekend, the Titans have posted 20 goals in the last three games. The win also was a bit of revenge for the team and winning goalie Brooks Ostergard (34 saves, 4-1), after a 7-1 defeat for both last Wednesday in Elmira.
Trenton (30-31-4-468 points) controlled most of the play in the first, taking a 1-0 into the break when Jacob Cepis finished off a wraparound to beat Maxime Clermont (28 saves, 19-13-3-2) midway through the period.
The lead quickly went to two after Mike Ullrich ripped a drop pass from Cepis into the net 46 seconds into the second period. Matt Tassone (2) finished a 2-on-1 to cut the lead in half at 8:06.
However that was as close as Elmira got all night, as Jesse Todd scored 20 seconds after Tassone, bumping the lead back to 3-1. Trenton added two more as Shane Harper (11) and the second of the night for Ullrich (15) made it 5-1, all but finishing the competitive portion of the game.
Elmira's Chaz Johnson (12) finished off a carry-over power play 12 seconds into the third to give some hope to the Jackals' fans. However the only drama would be with Harper.
The third year pro from Valencia, CA, had a chance at ECHL history if he could get a hat trick for a third straight game. Despite a couple great early chances, he would fall short. Still, he ended the game with that one goal and three assists. Over the last four games this week he totaled seven goals and six assists.
Cepis would be right with Harper all weekend as well. His goal (23) after Johnson's finished his night's scoring with two goals and three assists. For the last three games he notched 14 points of his own (5G, 9 A).
Todd would score his second of the game at 13:53. Then, on a play predicted to Alexandre Carrier by teammate Derrick Palis, Carrier fought in the crease after a Kory Nagy offensive draw led to a Pallis one-timer from the point. The ensuing scrum in front ended with the first professional goal for Carrier (in his 44th game) in the final minute to complete the scoring.
The Titans will get a couple days off before the Travelling Stick Show finishes the season with a three-game road trip through the Atlantic Division. Trenton goes to Reading (March 28), Elmira (March 29) and Wheeling (March 30) for 7:05 pm starts. The Voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos, will call all the action, starting with the pregame at 6:45 pm, on AmericaOne.com, 107.7 FM (Trenton) and 1077theBronc.com.
AFTER THE WHISTLE
Carrier's first professional point also came in Elmira, as he grabbed an assist in an 8-5 win on January 18.
Ostergard's four wins with Trenton have come on Sundays.
Overshadowed in the Harper/Cepis onslaught is the scoring of Ullrich, who had four goals and four assists over the last three games, running mainly on the same line as Cepis and Harper.
Trenton has won seven of its last 10, including a 2-2 mark against Elmira.
