FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The TinCaps tallied 12 hits on Wednesday night, but lost to the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-4, at Parkview Field.

This game went down to the wire as Fort Wayne (20-35, 47-74) scored a run in the eighth to trim its deficit and loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning. However, the TinCaps dropped to 20-34 in games decided by one or two runs on the season.

Fort Wayne led 2-1 at the end of the first inning, thanks to an RBI double by designated hitter Brandon Valenzuela and a two-out, run-scoring single from right fielder Agustín Ruiz.

But the Whitecaps (34-22, 65-57) answered with three in the second and two in the fourth to lead, 6-2.

Valenzuela drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to cut the score down to three.

TinCaps second baseman Lucas Dunn had a game-high three hits, including a pair of doubles, plus a walk.

Luke Boyd tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings of late relief to keep the home team in the game.

West Michigan is three games back of Lake County for the Midwest League East Division second-half title to clinch a playoff spot. There are 10 games left in the regular season.
