TinCaps Storm Back to Top Loons
June 1, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Despite scoring five runs in the first inning, the Great Lakes Loons could not hold on against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, losing 7-6 on Friday in the first of three games at Dow Diamond on Friday night.
TinCaps (25-28) starting pitcher Tom Cosgrove was pummeled by Loons hitters in the first inning - starting with Marcus Chiu.
After Brayan Morales drew a walk, Chiu roped his fifth double of the season to put Great Lakes on the scoreboard. Romer Cuadrado tripled and Starling Heredia doubled, making it a 3-0 lead for the Loons.
After scoring two more runs in the first, the Loons got back to work in the bottom of the second. Heredia singled on a line drive to left field for a 6-0 edge, which chased Cosgrove from the game. The Fort Wayne left-hander allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.
Cosgrove was replaced by reliever Korey Anderson, who tossed 2.2 innings without serving up a run before handing the ball to Caleb Boushley (W, 4-1) for the next 3.0 innings. In Cosgrove's most recent outing - May 26 against the Lansing Lugnuts - he went a career-long 7.0 innings and gave up three runs.
Fort Wayne mounted a comeback in the top of the third on a single from Esteury Ruiz to give the team its first run of the game. Then, Tirso Ornelas blasted a three-run home run. The big fly cut the Loons lead to two runs, 6-4.
Loons (18-35) starter Leo Crawford tossed 4.2 innings on Friday, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks. The right-hander from Nicaragua struck out two hitters. Prior to starting against the TinCaps, Crawford had not allowed a run in six of his last seven outings.
Crawford was replaced by right-hander James Carter, who went 1.1 scoreless before Max Gamboa took the hill. Gamboa has worked out of the bullpen since May 17. His appearance Friday was his first in relief at Dow Diamond.
In the seventh inning, a fielding error with Gamboa (L, 1-4) pitching scored Gabriel Arias and a sacrifice fly brought home Jalen Washington to give the TinCaps a 7-6 margin against the Loons.
Once the TinCaps earned the lead, they never looked back. Even with Morales on third base with two outs in the eighth, reliever Travis Radke got Chiu to fly out to the warning track. Radke (S, 8) went back out for the bottom of the ninth, worked himself out of a jam and secured the one-run victory.
The Loons and TinCaps return on Saturday for game two of three at Dow Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007.
