Cougars Sneak Past Wisconsin

Appleton, Wisconsin - The Kane County Cougars edged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 2-1, in game one of a three-game series at Fox Cities Stadium on Friday night.

In the bottom of the second, Wisconsin (24-31) third baseman Gilbert Lara singled with one out. Two batters later, Tristen Lutz tripled to drive in the game's first run and give the Timber Rattlers a 1-0 advantage. In the top of the fourth inning, Ernie De La Trinidad led off for the Cougars (28-25) with a double to left field. Ryan Tufts was the next batter and he singled to put runners at the corners with no one out. The next hitter, Joey Rose, grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at one. Jorge Perez and Yan Sanchez walked to load the bases. With two down and Jazz Chisholm at the plate, a wild pitch scored Rose from third, allowing the Cougars to earn a 2-1 edge.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Timber Rattlers put runners at first and second with one out. Joantgel Segovia hit a ball back to the pitcher. Cougar pitcher Matt Brill attempted to tag Segovia, but lost control of the ball, loading the bases. With the tying run at third and the winning run at second, Brill struck out Zach Clark and Gabriel Garcia to end the threat.

Cougar right-hander Jeff Bain (4-1) earned his second quality start of the year, tossing six innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits and striking out seven batters. Erbert Gonzalez earned a hold for his two innings of scoreless relief. Matt Brill picked up his sixth save of the year, working out of the bases loaded jam in the ninth.

Wilfred Salaman (0-1) took the loss for Wisconsin, surrendering both Cougar runs on four hits over 3.1 innings. Carlos Herrera tossed five innings in relief, yielding only one Cougars hit. Hererra struck out five batters. Cody Beckman hurled 0.2 innings of scoreless ball.
