BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps lost the first game of their three-game set in grand fashion as part of a 15-1 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Friday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The loss featured a 10-run fourth inning that watched the Hot Rods send 15 batters to the plate, and West Michigan pitchers issue four bases-loaded walks.
The contest began with a two-run home run by Bowling Green outfielder Moises Gomez to open the Hot Rods scoring and take a 2-0 lead. Taylor Walls launched a solo home run in the third before the enormous fourth. Renaldo Hernandez blasted a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season as part of the onslaught to extend the lead to 15-0. In the sixth, the Whitecaps got their only run on a run-scoring double by Jose Azocar.
Whitecaps starter Jose Vasquez (1-2) was overmatched in tossing three innings and allowing eight runs to suffer his second loss in as many outings. The rough start placed Vasquez's ERA at 10.32. Bowling Green starter Riley O'Brien (2-1) pitched five scoreless innings while striking out five to earn his second win. The Whitecaps record falls to 28-25 while the Hot Rods improves to 34-19.
