Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAYTON, OH - The Lansing Lugnuts (36-19) improved to 9-0 in 2018 vs. the Dayton Dragons (27-26), using six shutout innings from Turner Larkins and a late offensive breakout to conduct a 12-1 series-opening steamrolling on Friday night at Fifth Third Field.
The game marked a successful start to the Lugnuts season-long 13-game, 14-day road trip - and continued the Nuts' remarkable mastery of the Dragons. Lansing has outscored Dayton by an 80-32 margin in the nine meetings this season.
For the first six innings, Lansing led by just 1-0, thanks to a Brock Lundquist first-inning RBI single, the only run mustered against Dayton starter Packy Naughton (Loss, 3-5).
Then the Dragons' bullpen entered the game, and the Nuts' offense broke out. Yeltsin Gudino drilled a two-run double to key a four-run seventh inning against relievers Dauri Moreta and Sarkis Ohanian. Ryan Noda blooped a two-run single amid a four-run eighth inning against Ohanian and Ryan Nutof. The Lugnuts added icing on the cake with a three-run ninth inning against Nutof in the ninth.
11 of the 12 Lugnuts runs in the game were scored by the top four hitters in the order, Samad Taylor, Norberto Obeso, Cullen Large and Brandon Grudzielanek. Obeso, Large, Grudzielanek and 5-hitter Lundquist each collected three hits. Gudino and Noda, the Nuts' 6-7 batters, combined for seven RBIs. Every member of the lineup hit safely.
After Kyle Weatherly pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings, the Dragons spoiled the shutout on a Hendrik Clementina RBI single against Dany Jimenez in the ninth.
Left-hander Matt Gunter (1.80 ERA) makes his second Lugnuts start at 7:07 p.m. Saturday night, the second game of the three-game series. Dayton counters with right-hander Tyler Mondile (7.42).
They will return to Cooley Law School Stadium on Friday, June 15th, opening a three-game series against South Bend featuring Family Faith Night with LAFCU Fireworks on June 15th, Star Wars Night with LAFCU Fireworks on June 16th, and a Father's Day Delta Dental Kids Day with a special Jersey Giveaway on June 17th.
