Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

BURLINGTON, IOWA - Alex Kirilloff finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle Friday at Community Field, but the Cedar Rapids Kernels lost to the Burlington Bees, 4-3, in 10 innings within the opener of a three-game series. Kirilloff connected on his team-high ninth home run in the contest which was won by Burlington's walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th.

Julio Garcia delivered the game-winning hit for the Bees (23-32) during the extra inning. Leonardo Rivas started the frame at second base and stayed at second on an infield single by Spencer Griffin. After back-to-back strikeouts, the stage was set for Garcia, and he singled into left-center field to drive in Rivas and give Burlington its 4-3 triumph.

Friday's game opened with four hitless innings from Cedar Rapids' Randy Dobnak. He retired the first eight batters that he faced and set down 12 of the first 13 hitters overall after working around a two-out walk to Zane Gurwitz in the third inning.

The Kernels (25-27) scored the first two runs of the contest. Kirilloff hit a two-out single in the first and scored on an RBI double by Jose Miranda. Akil Baddoo added a solo home run within the fifth to put Cedar Rapids' lead at 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Burlington jumped in front by a 3-2 margin. Garcia and Connor Fitzsimons started the rally with back-to-back singles and moved up during a groundout by Jimmy Barnes. Both runners scored after a single from Gleyvin Pineda. An error on a pickoff attempt allowed Pineda to reach second base, and another error on a potential inning-ending groundout helped Pineda score the go-ahead run.

Kirilloff answered with his round-tripper to open the sixth. Batting against former Kernel Eduardo Del Rosario, Kirilloff lifted the first pitch of the inning over the left-field wall inside the foul pole to tie the contest at 3-3. The game would remain tied until Garcia's 10th-inning heroics.

Kyle Halbohn (1-0) claimed the victory Friday, and Calvin Faucher (1-1) was charged with the loss. Halbohn pitched two scoreless innings of relief in a winning decision. Faucher yielded an unearned run during the 10th and suffered his first professional loss.

Game two of this three-game series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Broadcast coverage will be available on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com and www.kernels.com.
