West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps finished off a 10-1 victory over the Dayton Dragons to complete a previously suspended game before falling 8-3 in the regularly scheduled contest on Thursday at Fifth Third Field.
In Game 1, West Michigan opened the scoring in the third when Cole Peterson plated a pair with a two-run triple to take a 2-0 lead. Rey Rivera's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 3-0, but the fifth inning was interrupted with a rain delay lasting nearly three hours. Upon resuming the game, Dragons pitcher Max Wotell walked four batters and gave up a grand slam to Dylan Rosa before being removed from the game. Another thunderstorm came, forcing the suspension and necessitating a resumption on Thursday night. Cole Peterson added a two-run single and joined Rosa with four-RBI performances as they went on to finish off a 10-1 victory.
Game 2 saw the Whitecaps fall behind early as Miles Gordon and Michael Beltre launched solo home runs in the first. Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, Rosa slammed another home run, a three-run shot to bring the score to 5-3. Dayton scored the final three runs of the contest to go onto an 8-3 win.
"Caps reliever Clate Schmidt (4-0) tossed three scoreless innings to earn the Game 1 win, while Brad Bass (3-4) allowed six Dayton runs in 3.1 frames to suffer his fourth loss. The Whitecaps remain in third place with a record of 28-25 - a half-game ahead of the Dragons, now sporting a 27-25 record on the season. Garrett McCain enjoyed a 3-for-5 performance at the plate to lead West Michigan in their Game 2 win.
