Lugnuts Explode Late, Defeat Dragons 12-1 on Friday Night

Dayton, Ohio-The Lansing Lugnuts broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the seventh inning and rolled on to a 12-1 win over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. A crowd of 7,645 was in attendance at Fifth Third Field.

The Lugnuts, with a 36-19 record, have the most victories of any team in Minor League Baseball in 2018. They collected 19 hits including 12 over the last three innings.

Lansing scored one run in the top of the first inning and held that lead through the first six. Dayton could not break through against Lugnuts starter Turner Larkins (4-4), who allowed only three hits and no walks over his six innings while striking out six to earn the win.

In the top of the seventh, Lansing's Yeltsin Gudino delivered a one-out bases loaded double to extend the Lugnuts lead. They scored four runs in the seventh and then added four more in the eighth and three in the ninth to build their lead to 12-0. The Dragons scored their only run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on an infield single by Hendrik Clementina that brought in a runner from third.

Dragons starting pitcher Packy Naughton (3-5) was the most effective Dayton pitcher of the night, but he was charged with the loss. He worked five and one-third innings, allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Dragons finished with only five hits by five different players. All hits were singles.

In the Standings: The Dragons are 27-26, in fourth place, eight games behind first place Lansing and seven games behind Bowling Green, the wildcard leader, in the Midwest League East Division.

Up Next: The Dragons host Lansing at Fifth Third Field again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. Tyler Mondile (1-4, 7.42) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Matt Gunter (0-1, 1.80).
