TinCaps Shuffle Roster Following All-Star Break

June 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - The Fort Wayne TinCaps underwent several roster changes Thursday following a first-half Eastern Division championship. INFs James Darnell and Matt Clark, OF Sawyer Carroll and LHP Nick Schmidt were promoted to Advanced-A Lake Elsinore. INF Justin Baum and OF Yefri Carvajal were added to the Fort Wayne roster from Lake Elsinore while OF Chadd Hartman was added from Short-A Eugene. "We said before the season that we had some potential major-leaguers on our team," TinCaps president Mike Nutter said. "The four guys on their way up certainly fit that bill and we are still stocked with more of that type of talent. The fact that the [San Diego] Padres sent us players from a level above us shows their commitment to maintaining a winner in Fort Wayne."

Darnell, 22, and Carroll, 23, were Midwest League All-Stars. Combined, they went 5-for-5 at the All-Star Game with Carroll winning "Star of Stars" honors as the game's most valuable player. Schmidt, 23, was a first-round selection in 2007 and is in the midst of a return from Tommy John surgery. Clark, 22, was second in the Midwest League in RBIs (55) in the first half of the season. Baum, 23, spent all of 2008 with Fort Wayne, hitting .264 with seven home runs and 70 RBIs. This year with Lake Elsinore, he was hitting .213 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 42 games. He had a phenomenal three-year career at the University of the Pacific and was a 7th-round draft pick in 2007. Carvajal, 20, also played the entire 2008 season in Fort Wayne. He hit .268 with four home runs and 55 RBIs. He opened 2009 with Lake Elsinore, hitting .262 with 13 doubles, four round-trippers and 29 RBIs in 61 games. In a three-game stretch this April, Carvajal hit home runs in back-to-back games and followed that with a five-hit game. Hartman, 22, was selected by the Padres in the 43rd round of this year's draft out of the University of Central Florida. His first professional hit was a home run on Monday for Short-A Eugene against Salem-Keizer.

The TinCaps still feature three MWL All-Stars in pitchers Anthony Bass, Zach Herr and Brad Brach. OF Jaff Decker, rated the No. 3 prospect in the San Diego organization, is expected to return from a back injury in the near future and INFs Drew Cumberland, Allan Dykstra and Cole Figueroa are among the Padres' Top 30 prospects according to Baseball America. OF Daniel Robertson, who was the Northwest League MVP last season, figures to receive everyday at-bats with Carroll's departure and OF Blake Tekotte has made eye-popping diving catches in center field on a regular basis. C Adam Zornes had a hot finish to the first half as he recovered from a shoulder injury. The TinCaps open the second half of the season at Parkview Field, Thursday at 7:05pm against the South Bend Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks). Fort Wayne RHP Simon Castro (4-4) goes to the hill against South Bend RHP Randy Rodriguez (1-4). The TinCaps' "Thirsty Thursday" prices will be in effect, with $1 beers and $2 well drink specials.
