
June Players of the Month Nominees Announced

DAYTON, OH - For the fourth consecutive season, the Dayton Dragons and 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM have teamed up to honor the Dayton Dragons 1410 ESPN Radio Hitter and Pitcher of the Month. Fans can log on to www.daytondragons.com upon the completion of each month and vote for who they feel were the best Dragons players over the past 30 days.
Each month, three hitters and three pitchers will be selected as nominees based on their performances on the field. The hitting nominees for the month of May are Kevin Coddington, Kyle Day, and Carlos Mendez. The pitching nominees are Scott Gaffney, Lance Janke, and Josh Ravin.
The winning players for the month of June will be honored on Thursday, July 2nd during an inning break of the game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Mark Neal, Program Director for WING-AM and host of Dayton Sports Scene, will present the award to the winning players on the field. There will also be a Player of the Month luncheon on July 3rd at McDonald's on York Commons Boulevard in Vandalia at 12:00 noon. Fans may attend to ask questions to the winning players and receive autographs. The players will be available to the media for interviews.
Below are the nominees for June (with stats through June 24th):
Hitter of the Month Nominees:
- C Kevin Coddington - Led the team in batting average (.320), walks (9), and on-base percentage (.417). Played steady defense at the catcher position and represented the Dragons in the Midwest League All-Star Game on June 23rd.
- OF Kyle Day - Ranked second on the team with a .289 batting average (in at least ten games played) and tied for the team lead with two home runs. Tied for third on the Dragons with eight runs scored and led the squad in OPS (.817) while playing four different positions (LF, 1B, C, DH).
- IF Carlos Mendez - Hit .274 with a home run and a team-best 13 RBI. Ranked second on the Dragons with 11 runs scored and three doubles. Reached base four times hitting behind Major League rehabber Joey Votto on Saturday, June 20th.
Pitcher of the Month Nominees:
- RHP Scott Gaffney - Posted a 2.61 ERA in six relief appearances totaling ten and one-third innings. Tied for the team lead in saves with two, while holding hitters to an opponents' batting average of .231. Struck out seven and only walked two over the course of the month.
- RHP Lance Janke - Went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts. Led the Dragons in strikeouts with 22, while ranking second on the team with 24 innings pitched. Struck out ten West Michigan batters in a win on June 21st.
- RHP Josh Ravin - Posted a team-best 1.44 ERA with a 2-1 record in four starts. Led the Dragons with 25 innings pitched, while ranking second on the team with 19 strikeouts. Held opponents to a .186 batting average to lead all starters. Had the best outing of his career on June 14th, when he allowed just two hits while striking out eight Lansing batters over six shutout innings.
