TinCaps Double Up Hawks in Second Half Opener

June 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks started the second half of the Midwest League season on Thursday night, but unfortunately it had a familiar feel as they fell to the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-4. Fort Wayne took 11 of 12 games from South Bend in the first half and have now taken the opener of the second half.

Fort Wayne plated two early runs against South Bend starter Randy Rodriguez (LP, 1-5) in the bottom of the first inning. Blake Tekotte started the game with a four pitch walk, and went to third on a perfect hit-and-run single by Drew Cumberland. After Cumberland stole second, Daniel Robertson advanced both runners with a sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead. Justin Baum followed with a RBI double to extend Fort Wayne's lead to 2-0.

Fort Wayne extended the lead to 5-0 in the second. After a single and an error put runners at first and second, Blake Tekotte connected for a three run homer to right, his eighth long ball of the year. It marked the 12th home run Fort Wayne has hit against South Bend in 13 games.

South Bend scored twice in the top of the third against Simon Castro (WP, 5-4) as they attempted a comeback. Jake Elmore and Reynaldo Navarro had back-to-back singles to start the inning, putting runners at the corners. With one out, Marc Krauss grounded out but scored Elmore from third, and with two outs Alberto Diaz singled to center to cut into the lead at 5-2.

South Bend added a run in the fourth against Castro, with Nelson Gomez starting the rally with a double. Victor Estevez advanced him to third with an infield single, and Isaias Asencio brought him home with a fielder's choice to make it 5-3.

Fort Wayne had a big answer in the bottom of the fourth however, with Drew Cumberland blasting a three run homer against Rodriguez to extend the lead to 8-3. Rossmel Perez and Gomez had back-to-back doubles in the top of the fifth to make it an 8-4 game, but the Hawks would get no closer.

Daniel Vasquez (ND) was a bright spot in long relief for the Silver Hawks, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing only one base hit. Bryan Woodall (ND) added a scoreless inning of relief as well.

The four game series continues with game two Friday night at 7:05 PM Eastern Time at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. LHP Wade Miley (3-5, 3.78 ERA) is expected to be activated from the disabled list and start for South Bend tomorrow, while Fort Wayne counters with RHP Stiven Osuna (2-6, 5.80 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
