Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Blake Tekotte and Drew Cumberland provided the offensive firepower for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in an 8-4 triumph over the South Bend Silver Hawks, Thursday at Parkview Field to open the season's second half.
Mike Watt, Nick Schumacher and Brad Brach combined to fire four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Combined, Tekotte and Cumberland went 5-for-7, scored five runs and drove in six. Both blasted home runs; Cumberland's was his second career round-tripper.
The TinCaps jumped ahead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Tekotte drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a perfect hit-and-run single by Cumberland, who promptly stole second base. A sacrifice fly by Daniel Robertson put Fort Wayne ahead, 1-0, and Justin Baum followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center in his first 2009 at-bat with Fort Wayne.
Yefri Carvajal led off the 2nd with a single through the right side. Kevin Hansen reached on an error and Tekotte ripped a three-run home run over the wall in right to give Fort Wayne a 5-0 lead.
South Bend got as close as 5-3 in the 4th inning, but the Fort Wayne bullpen took over in the latter innings to slam the door.
In the bottom of the 4th, Tekotte bounced an RBI single to right to make it 6-3 and Cumberland followed with a two-run shot over the right-field wall to push the lead to 8-3.
RHP Simon Castro (5-4) picked up the win, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings while striking out six. At one point, he struck out five consecutive Silver Hawks. South Bend RHP Randy Rodriguez was saddled with the loss, falling to 1-5.
The TinCaps improved to 46-25 overall, 1-0 in the second half. South Bend dropped to 27-42, 0-1 in the half.
The TinCaps and Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) continue the four-game series Thursday at Parkview Field at 7:05pm. Fort Wayne RHP Stiven Osuna (2-6) returns to the starting rotation against South Bend LHP Wade Miley (3-5
