New Half, Same Result as Cougars Win
June 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - A three-day respite for the Midwest League all-star break did not slow down the Kane County Cougars. After going into the break with back-to-back shutouts and a division title, the Cougars started the second half of the campaign Thursday night with a 12-3 thumping of the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 2,558 at Modern Woodmen Park. Pedro Figueroa notched his eighth win with a fifth straight quality start, and Franklin Hernandez drove in five to fuel the team's 14-hit attack.
Matt Ray homered in the top of the first off Gary Daley (3-2) to give the Cougars a quick lead. Then Hernandez crushed a two-run shot in the second and later nailed a three-run triple during a seven-run third. Jason Christian, Jeremy Barfield, Petey Paramore and Juan Nunez also delivered RBIs during the outburst, and the Cougars sent 12 men to the plate in the frame. They later added unearned runs in the fifth and eighth innings to complete their scoring.
Ahead 10-0 early, Figueroa (8-2) cruised through his outing. He gave up one hit -- a third-inning single -- over six dominant innings, walked one and tied a season high with nine strikeouts. He is 5-1 with six quality starts in his last seven outings. Scott Deal pitched two scoreless innings, and Brett Hunter served up a three-run homer in the ninth for the Bandits' only runs. Those tallies ended the Cougars' pitching staff's consecutive scoreless innings streak at 26.
