Bandits Trail in Wire-to-Wire Loss

June 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The beginning of the season's second half did not exactly go as planned on Thursday night, as the Quad Cities River Bandits suffered a 12-3 loss to the Kane County Cougars at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (0-1, 30-41) fell behind early on a solo homer just two batters deep into the game, but things spiraled out of control after a seven-run rally in the third. Kane County (1-0, 42-29) got five RBI from Franklin Hernandez while lefty Pedro Figueroa twirled six one-hit innings and struck out nine to earn his eighth win of the year.

The Cougars set the tone with an early display of longball, as Matt Ray poked a solo homer just beyond the ribbon board in the opening frame while Hernandez added a two-run blast in the second.

Already with a 3-0 lead, Kane County blew the game wide open with a third inning in which 12 men came to the plate. The first eight batters all reached base, including five consecutive singles against starter Gary Daley and reliever Miguel Tapia. Two of those singles were run-scoring knocks by Jason Christian and Jeremy Barfield, while a walk to Petey Paramore forced in a third run. Hernandez then stepped up with another big hit, lining a three-run triple to center that skipped past a diving Frederick Parejo and rolled all the way to the wall. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly by Juan Nunez capped the seven-run inning, plating Hernandez to run the Cougars' lead to 10-0.

That was more than enough for Figueroa (8-2), who allowed just one hit and three baserunners over his stifling six scoreless innings of work. None of the runners advanced beyond first base, as the southpaw from the Dominican Republic tied a season-high with nine strikeouts while limiting the River Bandits to one hit and one walk.

Meanwhile, Quad Cities marched out eight different pitchers to get through the evening.

Daley (3-2) started and lasted just two innings, roughed up for seven runs on seven hits to take the loss. Tapia finished the third frame and allowed three runs, while the next six relievers combined for six innings without yielding an earned run. Kane County added unearned runs in the fifth and eighth innings to lead by as much as 12-0.

The River Bandits did not get on the board until the ninth, when Brett Hunter plunked the first batter of the inning and walked the second hitter. Parejo followed with a long three-run homer to left, giving the home crowd something to cheer about as Quad Cities pulled to within 12-3.
