June 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OH - Dragons starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran has been named to the "World Team" roster for the 11th annual XM All-Star Futures Game. The game will be played at 2 P.M. on Sunday, July 12 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis as part of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game celebration. Former Dragon Chris Heisey has been named to the "U.S. Team" roster for the Futures Game.
In his first professional season, Sulbaran (pronounced "SOOL-buh-rong") is 2-1 with a 4.60 ERA in nine starts, all with the Dragons. Sulbaran, 19, is a native of Curacao and was the youngest member of Team Netherlands in March's World Baseball Classic. He also pitched for the Dutch during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Sulbaran was drafted in the 30th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft by the Cincinnati Reds and was named the organization's 20th-best minor league prospect by "Baseball America" prior to the 2009 season. Sulbaran joins Wily Mo Peña (2001) as the only two Dayton players that have been named to the Futures Game roster while still a member of the Dragons.
Heisey (pronounced "HIGH-see"), currently an outfielder with the AA Carolina Mudcats, was a member of the Dragons in 2007. He hit .289 with nine home runs and 46 RBI in 104 games and was a key member of the Dragons team that won the first half division title that season. In Carolina, he is currently batting .342 with 13 home runs and 40 RBI. He ranks in the top two in the Southern League in following categories: batting average, home runs, hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, extra-base hits, and runs scored. Heisey was a 17th-round selection by the Reds in 2006.
The Futures Game is an exhibition contest that features many of the top prospects from all levels of minor league baseball, and is traditionally held at the site of the Major League All-Star Game. This year's game will be staged in St. Louis' Busch Stadium two days before the 2009 Mid-Summer Classic.
