Bees Open 2nd Half with a Win

Burlington, IA (June 25, 2009) - The Burlington Bees began the second half of the season by defeating Cedar Rapids 9-4 Thursday night at Community Field. The Bees had 15 hits in the game and also hit three homeruns. The three homeruns were the most hit by the Bees in a game this season.

Cedar Rapids scored the first three runs of the game as they put up one run in each of the first three innings. The Bees put their first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Patrick Norris singled and then stole both second and third. Nick Van Stratten then hit into an RBI ground-out to score Norris and get the Bees within two runs.

The Bees took the lead by scoring five runs in the fourth inning. Nick Francis led the inning off with a single and then scored when Jose Bonilla hit a no-doubt homerun to tie the game 3-3. Chase Fontaine and Norris then each singled. With two outs, Fernando Garcia hit his first homerun of the season, which gave the Bees a 6-3 lead. The Kernels got back within two runs by scoring one run in the top of the fifth but the Bees answered in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Francis hit a solo homerun. The homerun was his tenth of the season.

The Bees added two final runs scoring one in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, Fontaine led off with a single and then moved first to third on a Juan Rivera double. Garcia then hit a sacrifice fly to score Fontaine. In the eighth, Van Stratten reached on a Fielder's Choice and moved to second on an Eric Hosmer single. Francis then singled to score Van Stratten to give the Bees their 9-4 lead.

Tim Melville got the start and the win for the Bees to move to 2-4. In six innings, he allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Derrick Saito pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit. He had three strikeouts and one walk and also picked up his first save of the season.

The Bees had 15 hits in the game. Francis led the way going 4-5 with two runs and two RBI. Garcia had two hits, one run and four RBI. Bonilla and Fontaine also had two hits with Bonilla picking up two RBI.

The Bees continue the four-game series with Cedar Rapids Friday night at Community Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. Mike Lehmann is the scheduled starter.
