Great Lakes Loons News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Brayan Villareal and Victor Larez combined to shut out the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday night, lifting the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 4-0 win in the second half opener for both teams.
A pair of unearned runs thanks to a two Loons errors gave the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead through two innings. A two-out ground ball to Jaime Pedroza resulted in a throwing error that allowed both Jordan Lennerton and Joe Bowen to score. Pedroza ranged far to his right to field the grounder by Avisail Garcia, but his spinning throw was wide of first base and both Whitecaps runners scampered home.
West Michigan tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, using back-to-back doubles by Ben Guez and Bowen in the fourth and an RBI single by Guez in the sixth to make it a 4-0 game.
All four runs were charged to Loons starting pitcher Bobby Blevins (5-5), who worked into the sixth inning. Blevins allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out five. Only two of the four runs were earned, marking the seventh time in his last eight starts that Blevins allowed two earned runs or fewer in a game.
Larez (4-4) earned the win in relief for the Whitecaps, pitching the final 4.2 innings and surrendering only one hit. He set down the last 10 Loons batters in order. Villareal worked the first 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and a walk.
The two teams continue their four-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Loons right-hander Justin Miller (3-2, 4.29) starts opposite Whitecaps righty Brandon Hamilton (3-2, 6.46). The game can be heard on ESPN 100.9 FM beginning with pre-game coverage at 6:30 p.m.
