LISTEN: Mike Maahs & Evan Stockton (ESPN Radio 1380 & 100.9 FM | TinCapsRadio.com | TuneIn)
FRIDAY NIGHT: The TinCaps lost the River Bandits, 2-0. 'Caps starter Joey Cantillo had his best start of the season with 5 scoreless innings and 8 strikeouts. The Bandits powered ahead with a 2-run Scott Schreiber homer in the 6th.
ON THIS DAY: In 1871, the Fort Wayne Kekiongas hosted the Forest City of Cleveland at Camp Allen Park (1.3 miles west of Parkview Field). In 2016, a monument was placed on the site to commemorate what is considered the first ever game in a professional baseball league, which the Kekiongas won, 2-0. The teams were members of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players.
ROSTER MOVES: The Padres have activated infielder Lee Solomon from Fort Wayne's Injured List. Solomon went on the IL April 27 (concussion protocol after a pitch he foul-tipped ricocheted and hit him in the mouth). Catcher/first baseman Nick Gatewood has been transferred to Extended Spring Training.
RIVER BANDITS RALLYING: The River Bandits call Modern Woodmen Park in Downtown Davenport, Iowa, their home. The ballpark is located literally feet a few feet off the Mississippi River. Due to severe flooding in the area, the stadium currently looks like it's on an island. This is the worst flood in Davenport since 1993. So far this season the Bandits have only been able to play 3 true home games, while having other home games relocated to Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Peoria. Despite the adversity, Quad Cities has the best record in the 16-team MWL.
X GIVING IT TO THE MWL: Infielder Xavier Edwards is batting a MWL-best .369. Edwards also has the league's highest OBP (.439). Edwards is tied for 3rd in Stolen Bases (8) & 6th in Runs (17)... In 23 games, Edwards has drawn 11 walks & struck out 9 times. His 1.22 BB/K ratio is 3rd highest in the MWL. His 9% K% is 5th lowest. He's swung & missed at only 2% of pitches he's seen -lowest SwStr% in the MWL.
MAKING HIS MARK: Infielder Tucupita Marcano is on an 11-game On-Base Streak after a 3-hit game Friday. Over the stretch, Marcano is batting .442 with a .489 OBP, 3 doubles, a triple, a home run, and 9 RBIs with 4 BB against 7 Ks... Marcano has only swung & missed at 4% of pitches - 4th lowest SwStr% in the MWL. His 13% K% is 10th lowest.
RUIZ RIPPING IT: Outfielder Agustin Ruiz has the 10th best Batting Average in the MWL at .322. His 19 RBIs are tied for 4th. To help explain his success, look to his Line Drive % on batted balls, which according to FanGraphs, is at 31% - 2nd highest in the MWL. Ruiz had a 9-game Hitting Streak & 12-game On-Base Streak end Thursday.
LITTLE DROUGHT: Outfielder Grant Little was batting .344 with a .412 OBP in 16 games through April 23, but has only 1 hit and 5 walks over his last 8 games. He's 0-for-his-last 22 with 6 strikeouts.
DWS OBP: Outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton has reached base in 20 of the 21 games he's played in this season. He opened the year on a 14-game on-base streak & has currently reached in 6 in a row. DWS has raised his BB% from 8% last year as a rookie to 17% this season. That said, Williams-Sutton, who hit the team's first homer of the season on April 6, has only 1 extra-base hit since, a double on April 9.
FERNANDEZ FIGHTING BACK: Catcher Juan Fernandez started his season 0-for-18 at the plate. He's 10-for-his-last-23 (.434) since April 16.
WALK & RUN: Outfielder Jawuan Harris has walked in 19% of his plate appearances this season. That's the 6th highest BB% in the MWL (and a jump from 14% for him last year as a rookie). Harris is also tied for 6th in the MWL in Runs (17) despite only starting in 22 games & batting 9th every time.
