Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The offense was dormant in the first six innings for Great Lakes with just one hit and one walk until a five-run outburst propelled the Loons to a 5-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
Wisconsin starter Aaron Ashby was dominant in the first six innings, throwing a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts. But as soon as he exited the game, the Loons took advantage. Jacob Amaya, Niko Hulsizer and James Outman led off the sixth with singles off reliever Chad Whitmer (L, 0-1) to load the bases. Romer Cuadrado then drew a walk to bring in the tying run and Luke Heyer was hit by a pitch to give the Loons the lead.
After Whitmer was chased from the game, Miguel Vargas drew a walk that brought home another run and Chris Roller knocked in two more runs with a single. In total, the Loons sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh and scored five runs on four hits, two walks and a hit by pitch.
Andre Jackson turned in another brilliant start for Great Lakes, limiting Wisconsin to one run in five innings, but was in line for the loss until the five-run seventh. Piggyback starter Jose Martinez (W, 1-1) finished the job in the final four innings, giving up no runs and one hit.
The Loons' win streak is now extended to eight games, which is the franchise's longest since 2015. Great Lakes has also won three series in a row now, and has a chance for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Dow Diamond is set for 2:05 p.m. EDT.
