Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - After trading runs early with the Kane County Cougars (17-11), the Lake County Captains (14-13) fell in 10 innings on Friday night at Classic Park, 8-5. Kane County's four runs in the top of the 10th inning handed the Captains their fifth straight loss.
The Captains jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning with a pair of runs against Cougars starter Ryan Weiss. Marcos Gonzalez started the inning with leadoff a single to center on the first pitch he saw after returning from the Injured List. Tyler Freeman followed with a single of his own. After the hits by Gonzalez and Freeman, Bo Naylor grounded out to second, scoring Gonzalez to give Lake County a 1-0 lead. Mitch Reeves singled into left field to score Freeman to make it 2-0. Though he did not factor in the decision, Weiss pitched six strong innings, giving up six hits and three runs with two strikeouts and no walks.
Working with early run support, Captains starter Cody Morris pitched lights-out over the first three innings. The right-hander held the Cougars hitless in the first three frames, but the visitors quickly grabbed the lead once they tallied their first hit. After Geraldo Perdomo worked a leadoff walk and Zachery Almond singled, the runners took off on a wild pitch in the dirt. Captains catcher Bo Naylor threw to second, but his throw sailed into centerfield, allowing Perdomo to score. Buddy Kennedy followed with a two-run home run to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
The Captains knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth. Ruben Cardenas hit a triple to lead off the inning and came home to score when Hosea Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to right center. Cardenas jogged home to tie the game at 3-3.
Lake County climbed back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kane County made a call to the bullpen, bringing in Wesley Rodriguez to relieve Weiss. After Rodriguez retired the first two men in the frame, Quentin Holmes doubled on a line drive to left. Holmes then stole third on the fourth ball thrown to Gonzalez. With runners at the corners for the Captains with two outs, Freeman stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to Kennedy at third base. Kennedy's throw to second, however, pulled Eddie Hernandez off the bag. The throwing error brought Holmes to the plate to give the Captains a 4-3 advantage.
The Captains' lead was short-lived, as Kane County evened the score in the top of the eighth. Geraldo Perdomo reached on an infield single to the right side and an errant pick-off attempt by reliever Luis Araujo sent the ball down the right field line. Perdomo raced all the way to third on the throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Almond to tie the ballgame at 4-4.
The game remained tied until the top of the 10th when the Cougars knocked in four runs against Captains reliever Manuel Alvarez. Andy Yerzy started the inning on second base as the free runner, per Minor League Baseball extra inning rules, and Hernandez singled him home on a line drive to right field scoring to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead. Eduardo Diaz then dribbled a ball in front of home and Alvarez threw wildly to first, allowing Hernandez to score all the way from first to make it 6-4. Diaz reached third on the error and, after Alvarez hit Perdomo with a pitch, Perdomo took off for second and stole the base. Shortly thereafter, a wild pitch allowed Diaz to score and an infield single by Alek Thomas brought Perdomo home to push the Cougars' lead to 8-4.
Lake County got one run back in the bottom of the 10th. Freeman started on second and quickly took third base on defensive indifference. Naylor followed with a sacrifice fly to score Freeman to make it 8-5, Kane County.
Cougars reliever Chester Pimentel picked up the win. Pimentel (2-1) pitched two innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Alvarez (1-1) took the loss for Lake County. The right-hander worked two innings and gave up four unearned runs on a pair of hits. He struck out two and walked one.
The Captains are back in action Saturday night against the Cougars. First pitch at Classic Park is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
