Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps ended a four-game losing skid with a 4-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings (Seattle Mariners) on Monday night at Parkview Field.
Left fielder Robbie Podorsky extended his on-base streak to 15 games as he went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. He was also hit by a pitch.
Fort Wayne (14-16, 46-53) scored three first inning runs-all after there were two outs and no one on base. Center fielder Jeisson Rosario was hit by a pitch and shortstop Gabriel Arias and catcher Juan Fernandez drew walks to load the bases. Second baseman Kelvin Melean singled to score Rosario and Arias, followed by a single from third baseman Luis Almanzar to score Fernandez that gave the TinCaps a 3-1 lead.
Fort Wayne added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Right fielder Jack Suwinski singled, followed by a single from Podorsky and an RBI-single from designated hitter Esteury Ruiz, scoring Suwinski and increasing the TinCaps' lead to 4-2.
Clinton (17-13, 56-44) started the game with a run in the top of the first. Joseph Rosa, Ariel Sandoval and Jack Larsen all singled with no outs to score Rosa and make it 1-0.
The LumberKings also scored in the top of the third. With one out, Sandoval singled, followed by another single from Larsen to score Sandoval that cut the TinCaps' lead to 3-2.
Fernandez, Melean and first baseman Jalen Washington all had multi-hit games. Fernandez went 2-for-3 with a walk, while Melean was 2-for-4 with a double and Washington was 2-for-4 with two singles. All nine Fort Wayne batters reached base.
Ben Sheckler (normally a reliever) made a spot start-just his second of the season-and went three innings. He struck out one batter and induced five groundouts, including a 6-4-3 double play to end the first. Relievers Austin Smith, Caleb Bosley, Evan Miller and Travis Radke combined for six scoreless innings of work with six strikeouts.
Radke tossed a six-out save for his 12th save of the season, which is tied for third most in the Midwest League.
The 'Caps have Tuesday off before traveling to Dayton for a three-game series, followed by a four-game series at Bowling Green.
