'Caps Walk Bandits to Series Win

DAVENPORT, IA - The West Michigan Whitecaps walked three batters with the bases loaded and hit another in a six-run third inning as part of a 7-4 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits Monday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.

Hernandez, the Detroit Tigers no. 20 prospect, according to Baseball America, struggled mightily in a third inning after tossing two scoreless frames. The 19-year-old allowed four straight singles to begin the third before walking two batters with the bases loaded. Reliever Oswaldo Castillo walked another and hit a batter to give Quad Cities all the offense they needed in the contest.

The Whitecaps built a 3-0 lead in the contest in the early going, as Brock Deatherage delivered an RBI-single to open the scoring in the first. Deatherage extended West Michigan's lead to 3-0 with a third-inning sacrifice fly, but the Bandits sent 11 batters to the plate in a laboring inning for Hernandez and Castillo. In the fourth, Castillo issued a wild pitch to allow Quad Cities outfielder Seth Beer to score and lengthen the "Caps deficit to 7-3. Castillo also hit two batters in his appearance on the mound. In the fifth, Brady Policelli blasted his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot that traveled 408 feet to bring the score to 7-4 Quad Cities.

Hernandez (0-4) gave up six runs in just 2.1 innings to suffer his sixth straight loss in as many appearances between West Michigan and Connecticut, while Peter Solomon (8-2) tossed five innings allowing four runs to earn his eighth victory. Brennan Feldmnann tossed a scoreless ninth in relied to pick up his fifth save of the season. The Whitecaps record falls to a season-low two games under .500 at 49-51 this season while sporting a 13-17 mark in the second half. The River Bandits win this three-game series two games to one and improve to 15-15 in the second half while sending their overall record to 55-45. Policelli led the Whitecaps offense with two hits and two runs scored while Kody Clemens reached base three times with a triple and two runs scored.
