Dayton Dragons News Release

Beloit, Wisc. - Dayton pitchers Austin Orewiler and Wendolyn Bautista combined on an 11-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Beloit Snappers 3-0 on Monday afternoon. The win gave the Dragons a split of their six-game Wisconsin road trip as they finished with a 3-3 record. They won two-of-three in Beloit, who had won 13 of their last 15 games entering the series.

Orewiler (4-3), the Dragons starting pitcher, worked out of trouble in each of his six innings, getting three big double play balls to help him out of jams. He allowed no runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Wendolyn Bautista replaced Orewiler in the seventh and was in immediate trouble, allowing three straight hits with one out to load the bases. But Bautista notched back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. Bautista then pitched a perfect eighth inning, the only inning on the day in which Beloit did not have base runners. Bautista allowed a lead-off single in the ninth but got the fourth double play ball of the day and finished the inning for his first save.

The Dragons scored single runs in the second and third to take an early 2-0 lead. In the second, Mark Kolozsvary doubled to the fence in right-center field with two outs and scored on a single to right by Leandro Santana. In the third, Jose Garcia reached on an error with one out, went to second on an infield single by Andy Sugilio, and scored on a base hit by Jeter Downs to make it 2-0.

Garcia blasted a solo home run to left field in the eighth, his second homer of the year, to close out the scoring.

The win lifted the Dragons record to 15-16 in the second half. They are tied with Lake County for the wildcard position in the Midwest League East Division Second Half playoff chase. Beloit fell to 19-10 in the second half.

Up Next: The Dragons do not play on Tuesday. They host the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the start to a three-game series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Patrick McGuff (1-0, 0.00) will make his third start for Dayton. He has not allowed a run in his first 10 innings with the team.
