Missed Opportunities Result in 3-0 Snappers Loss

Beloit, WI - The Beloit Snappers (51-47) racked up 11 hits but failed to put any runs on the board in their 3-0 loss Monday afternoon to the Dayton Dragons (46-53) at Pohlman Field in front of 1,215 fans.
The Snappers finished with 11 hits as a team, their ninth 10 hit game in the last 14 games but left nine players on base and went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Those 11 hits are the most this season in a shutout loss, Monday being their ninth shutout loss of the year.
They grounded into four double-plays that killed off promising innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Gridley led off the inning with a single, but he was retired on a 4-6-3 twin killing off the bat of Skyler Weber.
The lone hit with runners in scoring position for the Snappers came off the bat of Nick Allen in the seventh inning and trailing Dayton 2-0. After Weber and Jesus Lage singled, Allen singled to load the bases with one out and it would be the Snappers best opportunity to get runs.
However, Lazaro Armenteros and Hunter Hargrove would strike out back-to-back to end the threat and keep the Dayton lead at 2-0.
Dayton got on the board first in the second inning with an RBI single to right from Leandro Santana that scored Mark Kolozvary. In the third, the Dragons second baseman Jeter Downs singled home Jose Garcia and after three innings, it was 2-0 Dayton.
Dayton would tack on an insurance run in the eighth on a solo home run from Garcia, his second homer of the season.
Overall, Allen went 2-for-4 with two singles in his last two at bats. It was his 12th multi-hit game in his 30 overall games. Ryan Gridley would get his first three-hit game of the season going 3-for-4.
Snappers starter Jean Ruiz earned his first loss in his last five outings, moving to 4-7 on the year. He went six innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts.
Dragons starter Austin Orewiler got his sixth win of the season and didn't give up a run in six innings and three strikeouts. Wendolyn Bautista got his first save of the season, finishing the last three innings scoreless.
For Beloit, it was just their first series loss in the last six series and fourth loss in the last 18 games overall. They also failed to record an extra-base hit for the second consecutive game, just their second occurrence in the last 31 games.
The Snappers will now enjoy a league-wide off day tomorrow before embarking on a seven-game road trip. The trip will begin on Wednesday when the Snappers take on the Kane County Cougars at 12:00 noon to begin a three-game series. Left-hander Ivan Andueza (1-6, 5.27) will take the hill for Beloit. Opposing the Snappers will be right-hander Jayson McKinley (3-3, 4.39).
