The next batter, Jimmy Herron, came to the plate with the bases loaded, representing the tying run. He hit a ball to the wall in left, but Cougar left fielder Luis Silverio scaled the fence to make the catch. A run scored on the play to cut the Cougar lead to 8-5, but the next batter struck out to end the game.

Lane Ratliff tossed three innings, allowing four runs. Breckin Williams was not charged with any runs, but was on the mound in the ninth to record the final three outs.

Cubs starter Brendan King (3-5) suffered the loss, completing his start after 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Manuel Rodriguez tossed 1.1 innings, yielding three unearned runs. Ben Hecht coughed up three runs in three frames.
