Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Seven strong innings from starter Dylan Thompson and timely hitting from the middle of the order powered the Sioux Falls Canaries to a 6-3 win over the Cleburne Railroaders Wednesday night.
The Birds' 13th win of the season leveled the series at a game apiece heading into Thursday's rubber game.
Sioux Falls jumped out to an early lead in the first, with help from a Cleburne miscue. Jordan Smith reached on a three-base error by Railroaders left fielder Cam Monger, and Blake Schmit drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
Cleburne tied the game in the second on a solo home run by Rafael Palmeiro to tie the game at 1. It was the third home run of the season for the 20-year MLB veteran.
The Railroaders added two more runs in the frame, including an RBI single from new acquisition Angel Rosa. They led 3-1 after two.
The Birds took the lead for good in the fourth inning, starting with an automatic double by Jabari Henry. Chris Grayson moved him to third with a bunt single.
David Bergin brought them both in with a two-run double, breaking an 0-for-14 slump and tying the game at 3. A sacrifice fly from Maxx Garrett made it 4-3 Birds after four.
Thompson grinded through seven innings for Sioux Falls. The righty allowed three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out six. He threw 114 pitches.
The Birds plated two insurance runs in the eighth off Cleburne reliever Jesus Sanchez. Jabari Henry led off the inning with a triple, marking his first multi-hit game since June 16.
Chris Grayson drove Henry in with a single, then stole second and third over the next at-bat. After a David Bergin walk, Jordan Dean hit a ground ball that Rosa couldn't field at short, scoring Grayson on the error.
Kyle Schepel and James Jones worked the eighth and ninth innings for Sioux Falls. Neither allowed a hit. Jones picked up his seventh save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth.
