
Tigers lose 6-5 despite late rally

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were defeated by the Binghamton Senators 6-5 at home despite scoring four unanswered goals in the third period on Sunday.
"We showed an excellent effort to make a great comeback," Sound Tigers head coach Dave Baseggio said.
Brandon Bochenski scored three of the four goals for Binghamton in the opening period. He tipped his first of the game and 16th of the year on the power play at 2:13 with Filip Novak and Jeff Heerema picking up the assists. His second of the game and 17th of the year also came on the man advantage with 2:04 left in the frame with Denis Hamel and Heerema picking up assists.
Danny Bois upped the lead 3-0 with his 12th tally of the year with 34.9 seconds left, Charlie Stephens and Grant Putulny picked up the assists.
Bochenski's third of the game and 18th of the year came with 2.4 seconds left in the period, Brad Norton and Novak assisted on the play.
The Sound Tigers pulled goaltender Wade Dubielewicz in favor of Frederic Cloutier to start the second period. Dubielewicz stopped 12 of 16 shots.
The Sound Tigers cut the lead to 4-1 with 4:23 left to play in the second period when Masi Marjamaki scored his seventh tally of the year off assists from David Masse and Paul Flache. However, Binghamton answered back 1:49 later when Stephens scored his 16th goal of the year with help from Joe Cullen and Novak to up the lead 5-1.
Hamel then increased the lead to 6-1 when he scored his 37th goal of the year off assists from Novak and Mike Kompon with 45.8 seconds left in the middle frame.
In the final frame, the Sound Tigers scored four unanswered goals but couldn't send the game into overtime.
Jeremy Colliton scored his 15th of the year off assists from Sean Bergenheim and Tomi Pettinen at 5:05 cutting the lead to 6-2. Masse then scored his 10th and 11th of the season 38 seconds apart at 10:14 and 15:52. Matt Koalska and Harlan Pratt received the assists on Masse's first goal to cut the lead 6-3, and Koalska and Marjamaki picked up the assists on the second to pull the Sound Tigers to within 6-4. Jeff Hamilton then rifled his 18th of the year with 4:35 left to play with Bruno Gervais and Cole Jarrett picking up the assists to make the final score 6-5.
The Sound Tigers pulled Cloutier in favor of an extra attacker with under a minute to play but failed even up the game.
Cloutier finished with ten saves on 12 shots for the Sound Tigers who held the shots on goals advantage of 39-28. Billy Thompson stopped 34 shots for Binghamton who was 2 for 2 on the power play and 6 for 6 on the penalty kill.
The first star of the game was Bochenski with three goals, Novak was the second star with four assists, and Masse was the third star with two goals and an assist.
The Sound Tigers will host the Albany River Rats this coming Wednesday, March 1st at 7:05 p.m. on "College Night" with $2 16-ounce drafts in the Club Lounge and Atrium Bar. The Sound Tigers will also host the Springfield Falcons next Saturday, March 4th at 7:05 p.m. and the Norfolk Admirals next Sunday, March 5th at 1:05 p.m. before beginning a stretch of seven straight road games when they visit Norfolk on Friday and Saturday, March 10th and 11th.
