Pirates Sink Admirals
February 26, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
The Pirates downed Norfolk 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in Portland.
The Pirates took advantage of two Norfolk turnovers to take a 2-0 lead in the first period. Aaron Gavey stole the puck in the right corner of the Admirals' zone. Gavey centered a pass to Ryan Shannon, who sent a wrister past Norfolk netminder Corey Crawford at 4:44. Ten minutes later, a center-ice turnover led to a two-on-one break for Portland. Simon Ferguson fed a pass to Joel Perrault for a goal at 15:28. Both teams fired eight shots on net in the first period, but the Admirals trailed the Pirates 2-0 heading into the locker room for the first intermission.
Despite four power play opportunities, the Admirals were unable to solve Portland puckstopper Nathan Marsters in the second period. Defense prevailed as none of Portland's seven or Norfolk's eight shots found the back of the net, and the Pirates maintained a 2-0 lead as the teams began the third period.
Two Portland even strength goals in the first half of the final frame gave them a 4-0 lead. Ferguson scored five-hole at 6:50 of the final frame. Derek Edwardson got a goal off a slap shot at 8:25. Mark Cullen broke up Marsters' shutout bid with just 1:05 left, as he received a pass in the slot from Pavel Vorobiev and wristed the puck top shelf. However, that would be the extent of the Admirals' offense as Portland won the game 4-1.
Corey Crawford was saddled with the loss and stopped 25 of 29 shots. Nathan Marsters picked up the victory with 24 saves on 25 shots.
Norfolk was 0-10 on the power play. Portland was 0-6.
