Iowa Chops News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Iowa Stars and San Antonio Rampage concluded their two-game set on Sunday afternoon in Texas. For the ninth time this season, the Stars went to the shootout, ultimately falling 4-3. Despite the shootout loss, Iowa does pick-up a point in the standings and gains ground on the dormant Omaha Knights.
Right Wing David Oliver put the Stars ahead just 3:44 into the first period. Captain Dan Jancevski extended his points-streak to four games with an assist and tied a career-high with 26 points. Midway through the first period, San Antonio's Layne Ulmer tied the score at one. Dwayne Zinger gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.
Ulmer scored his second of the game when he stole a clearing attempt by Iowa goalie Mike Smith. Iowa's Yan Stastny pulled the Stars to within one at the end of the second period. Defenseman Mike Gabinet earned his first AHL point, an assist, on the goal. The Stars out-shot the Rampage 16-3 in the second period.
Defenseman Shawn Belle picked the right time to score his first professional goal, tying the game at three on a stick-side top-shelf shot at the halfway mark of the third period. Iowa's overall play was the story of this period as Iowa held San Antonio to just six shots in the period, with five coming in the first 1:30 of the period.
With a 3-3 tie, the Iowa Stars went to a shootout for the ninth time this season. Rampage goalie David LeNeveu stopped all five shots and Steve Gainey scored on San Antonio's fifth and final attempt for the extra point.
Stars Goalie Mike Smith faced 14 shots in regulation and one in overtime. The 16 total shots is a new team-low for Iowa's defense. The previous mark was 18 on October 29th in Chicago.
