Thunderbolts Use Six-Run Second To Run Away With Win

Crestwood,IL - The Florence Freedom(15-13) jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead but couldn't hang on as the Windy City ThunderBolts used a six run second to defeat the Freedom 6-4 Tuesday night at Standard Bank Stadium.

Byron Wiley gave the Freedom a 1-0 lead after his RBI single in the first. Jacob Tanis made it 2-0 when he grounded a ball back to pitcher Travis Strong who made a low throw to the shortstop covering second base trying to get a force out. The error on the Windy City pitcher allowed J.C. Figueroa to come in and score. Jeremy Hamilton also provided an RBI single in the inning to go up 3-0.

Windy City took the lead for good in their second. Freedom starter Daniel DeSimone(4-1) hit leadoff batter Andrew Brauer. With one out in the inning, Doug Joyce drew a walk which set the stage for four consecutive hits. Louis Templeton drove in the first run on an RBI single. C.J. Gillman followed with an RBI single of his own to make the score 3-2. Two batters later Mike Torres singled in a run to tie the game at 3-3. With two outs in the inning, Ryan Soares reached on an error by shortstop Junior Arrojo which allowed Gillman to score for a 4-3 lead. Brauer then followed with a two run single to make the score 6-3.

DeSimone suffered his first loss of the season as pitched 1.2 innings allowing 6 hits on 6 runs(3 earned). The Freedom bullpen of Chuck Weaver and Brent Choban combined for 6.1 innings of scoreless ball.

Arrojo, Wiley, Hamilton, and Jim Jacquot led the Freedom with two hits apiece.

The Freedom will look to even up the three game series with Windy City Wednesday night. RHP Jason Wilson(1-3, 3.34 ERA) will face RHP Dyllon Nuernberg(0-1, 2.66 ERA) The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 7:50 pm on radio station 1320 AM and gospe11320.com
