Joliet Slammers News Release

Last time out...

The Slammers fell to the Traverse City Beach Bums by a score of 6-4 on Sunday at Wuerfel Park. The Beach Bums jumped out to the early lead with four runs scoring in the third inning. A Chase Burch three-run home run gave Traverse City a 3-0 lead and they would tack on one more in the frame on a RBI ground-out. Chris Cowell added a solo home run of his own in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0. The Slammers finally rallied in the fifth when they scored three times. An error, a Seth Schwindenhammer RBI double and a fielder's choice allowed the three runs to score for Joliet. In the bottom of the fifth, Burch launched another long ball to extend the Traverse City lead to 6-3. A Nick Akins home run in the seventh cut the deficit to 6-4 but that is all Joliet would get as they dropped their fourth straight game and were swept by the Beach Bums.

For Starters Game One...

Shawn Kale is coming off a brilliant performance on June 13 in game one of a double header against the River City Rascals. He tossed a complete game shutout, going all seven innings, giving up five hits, striking out eight and not walking anyone to pick up his first victory of the season in his first start as a member of the Slammers. Kale is a product of D-2 Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. The 24-year old right-hander went 3-0 in the Pecos League and also pitched for the Abilene Prairie Dogs of the North American Baseball League last season in his first year of professional baseball.

For Starters Game Two...

Chuck Lofgren is also coming off an outstanding performance as he was the starter in game two of the June 13 double header against the River City Rascals. He went seven shutout innings and only gave up four hits while striking out three and walking one. He picked up a no-decision as the Slammers lost in extra innings. Lofgren, 27, was a fourth round selection of the Cleveland Indians in the 2004 MLB draft out of Serra High School in San Mateo, California. Lofgren's decorated professional career includes being named the starting pitcher for the 2006 Carolina League All-Star Game. Lofgren followed that up by being named to the United States team for the 2007 All-Star Futures Game. The United States roster that year also included the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Matt Garza and Justin Upton. He pitched for the Cleveland organization from 2004-2009, the Milwaukee organization from 2009-2010 and the San Francisco organization from 2010-2011. Last season, Lofgren pitched for the Amarillo Sox of the American Association. Most recently, he was with the Brisbane Bandits of the Australian Baseball League. Lofgren has appeared in a total of 47 games at the Triple-A level during his professional career.

Wrong kind of streak...

The Slammers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak. If they lose both games of the double header they will match their longest losing streak of the year at six games. They are also in the midst of their longest road losing streak of the year at three games.

Winging it...

Michael Wing has been a bright spot on offense this season for Joliet. He is leading the team in batting average at .303 and RBI with 16. His eight doubles are first on the team.

Where are the runs?

The Slammers have scored only 102 runs this season, the fewest in the Frontier League.

They gone!!

Slammers' pitching has struck out 213 batters so far this season; second most in the Frontier League.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers placed INF Grant DeBruin on the 7-Day DL. They activated RHP Mike Barsotti. LHP David Jensen retired. RHP Brian Valente was released. The Slammers signed OF Kyle Robinson, INF Mike Mercurio and RHP Matt Dillon.
