Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters (19-9) split a doubleheader with the Joliet Slammers on Wednesday, winning the first game 5-0, and losing the second game 6-0.
Pitcher Matt Zielinski (4-0) threw a complete game, four-hit shutout guiding Evansville to the game one win. First baseman Andrew Clark also had a home run and four RBIs in the victory as well.
The first game was scoreless into the fifth inning when Clark hit a three run home run against Joliet starter Shawn Kale. Infielder Steve Marino followed Clark's round-tripper with a solo home run to left field. It was the second time the Otters have hit back to back home runs this season and it gave Evansville the 4-0 edge.
Zielinski retired seven batters in a row at one point, allowing just four hits on his way to the win.
After losing the first game, Joliet jumped ahead early in the second. Slammers outfielder David Christiansen reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Evansville brought the infield in, but a ricocheting groundball brought home Christiansen and gave Joliet a 1-0 lead.
The score would stay the same until the top of the seventh inning when Joliet added another five runs.
Outfielder Nick Akins hit an RBI single against Otters reliever Pat Goelz for the 2-0 advantage. Joliet would add a grand slam later in the inning against pitcher Scott Weismann for the 6-0 win.
Otters pitcher Matt Crim (1-3) takes the loss, despite yielding just one run in 5.0 innings.
Evansville is now 8-2 in doubleheaders this season. The Otters will look for their ninth straight series win on Thursday night in the series finale against the Joliet Slammers.
The game on Thursday, June 20 will also be extra special as it is Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village Night, Swat Pest Night, and Thirsty Thursday!
