(Evansville, IN) - The Joliet Slammers (12-17) split the series opening double header, losing game one on Wednesday 5-0 to the Evansville Otters (19-9) and winning game two 6-0.

Matt Zielinski (4-0) shut down Joliet in game one. He pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing 4 hits through seven innings. However, in game two, it was Chuck Lofgren (3-2) who carried the Slammers for most of the ballgame until the bats woke up for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Lofgren also struck out seven Otters in six innings of work, while carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

In the first game, Shawn Kale (1-1) picked up his first loss as a starter, as it was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth before Kale surrendered four runs to Evansville on back-to-back home runs.

In the second contest, Joliet was quiet most of the game, scoring the game's first run in the second inning on a groundout RBI for Nick Akins, scoring David Christensen. But in the seventh inning, Atkins hit a RBI single, scoring Christensen once again on the play to give the Slammers a 2-0 lead.

However, it was the grand slam home run for Marquis Riley that was the highlight of the inning, pushing Joliet to a victory and a double header split.

The rubber contest is Thursday back at Bosse Field with first pitch coming at 6:35 and the pre game show on 1340 WJOL starting at 6:20 p.m.
