SUCCESS IN SOUTH TEXAS- Wichita swept its weekend series in southern Texas and claimed four points. On Friday night, Wichita defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 4-1. RG Flath had his second multi-goal outing of the season and Bryan Hogan earned his second win in a Thunder uniform in back-to-back starts for the rookie goalie out of the University of Michigan. Saturday night was much of the same as Wichita traveled to Laredo for the first time since 2009-10. After allowing the first goal, Wichita scored the next three and won 5-2 against the Bucks. Matt Robinson, Chris Chappell and Flath all scored for Wichita and Adam Russo earned his 20th win of the season. It was just the second win all-time for Wichita at Laredo Energy Arena. The Thunder remain one point ahead of Allen in the Berry Conference, setting up another battle for first place this coming Thursday night against the Americans.
BUCK HUNTING - Matt Robinson and Jarred Mohr performed well against their old team. Both played for Laredo last season and were acquired in trades to Wichita. The Thunder sent the Bucks future considerations for Robinson, who is now a two-time all-star and last year's leading scorer in a Thunder uniform. Mohr played two seasons with the Bucks before heading to Rapid City in the pre-season. Wichita traded for Mohr before the home opener in October and he has been steady on the blue line. Robinson had three points (1g, 2a) while Mohr added two assists, helping Wichita earn its 29th win of the season. Since returning to the line-up, Robinson has five points in his past two games (2g, 3a).
POINT STREAK- RG Flath, Matt Summers and Chris Chappell picked up right where they left off this past weekend. Flath extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, notching two on Friday and one on Saturday. He has six points (5g, 1a) in that span and is five shy of tying a career-high 16 goals, which he set last season in Mississippi. Summers and Chappell are each riding three-game point streaks and each have six points in that span as well. Summers has two goals and four assists while Chappell has five goals and one assist. Chappell is one shy of tying a career-high 9 goals, which he reached last season in Greenville.
ROLLIN' DOWN THE RIVER- Even with several key players missing from the line-up, Wichita continues to find ways to win. The Thunder is riding a four-game win streak and has won five out of its last six contests. Wichita leads the league in points (60), winning percentage (.698), goals scored (157), wins (29) and wins at home (18).
IRON MEN- Travis Wight and Jarred Mohr are the only players to have played in every game so far this season. Due to injuries and call-ups, the two have flourished while logging a lot of minutes. In 43 games, Mohr has 23 points (4g, 19a) and is a +15 while Wight is a +7.
CLOSING TIME- Wichita is at the top of many categories in the CHL, but the most important stat to look at may just be the Thunder's ability to shut down its opponent in the third period. Wichita has outscored and outshot teams this season by a wide margin in the final frame. The Thunder is one of only three teams to allow less than 400 shots total in the third period and a CHL-low 363. Along with that stat, Wichita holds a 56-38 edge in scoring against the other teams in the league in the third.
