Tulsa Oilers News Release

Week In Review: Tulsa went 1-2 last week after a Tuesday win over Rio Grande Valley followed by back-to-back losses in Allen on Friday and Saturday.

Michel Beausoleil scored two minutes into the third period against Rio Grande Valley to propel the Oilers to a 5-4 victory over the Killer Bees. The Oilers, who won two games in a row for the first time since late December, increased their lead over the Bees to five points in the Berry Conference standings. Tulsa is now 1-1 against Rio Grande Valley this season.

Friday in Allen, the Oilers fell behind 3-0 but picked up a pair of goals in the third period from Beausoleil and Gerome Giudice to pull within striking distance of the Americans. However, Tulsa couldn't complete the comeback and the Americans prevailed 3-2 in just their second win in six meetings against the Oilers.

Saturday, the Americans again jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Allen scored three times in first four and a half minutes of the third to push their advantage to 5-0. The Oilers offense mustered only 12 shots on goal through the first two periods in a 5-1 loss with Jason Weeks scoring the lone goal. Despite the pair of setbacks, the Oilers finished the regular season series against Allen with a 4-3 record.

Which Offense Is It?: During a six-game stretch in late January, the Oilers never scored more than two goals. In the last two home games against Laredo and Rio Grande Valley, Tulsa put up 12 goals, its highest two-game total since scoring six times against Arizona and Laredo on November 22nd and 24th. The offense disappeared again in Allen as the Oilers were held to three goals and 43 shots in a two-game span. Tulsa's home record (12-4-2) would seem to indicate that the offensive pace picks up at the BOK Center, but the numbers don't tell the same story. The Oilers have scored 74 of their 143 goals at home, or just over 51 percent.

Shorthanded? So What!?: Tulsa's penalty killing unit stayed red hot this week by shutting down 15 straight powerplays. The Oilers PK squad, anchored by veterans like Marty Standish and Tyler Fleck, has allowed only one opposing powerplay goal in the last six games. Saturday night in Allen, the Oilers survived five consecutive minor penalty calls in the first twelve minutes of the second period. The Americans had two separate 5-on-3 advantages and both were killed off by the Oilers.

Weeks Makes Most of Time: All season long, second year forward Jason Weeks has found himself on the Oilers roster and then off again. Weeks, who was waived and re-signed on four different occasions, never grumbles or complains about his role, he simply performs when called upon. The Seattle native was added to the roster just before the trip to Allen last weekend and made the most of his ice time with a goal and an assist in two games against the Americans. In fifteen games this season, Weeks has five goals, three assists, and a +2 rating. The 26-year old winger boasts the highest shooting percentage on the active roster with his five goals coming on just 23 shots.

Berry, Berry Good To Tulsa: At this point in the season, the Oilers have a record of .500 or better against every team in the Berry Conference except for Wichita. Tulsa is 4-5-1 against the league leading Thunder and will finish the regular season series with Wichita this Friday. Against all other conference foes, the Oilers are a combined 14-6-1. However, of the Oilers remaining 23 games, only eight will be against Berry opponents.

Upcoming Games: Tulsa visits Wichita for the final time this season on Friday before returning home to face Evansville on Saturday and Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.
