Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Dave Krynzel paced the Baysox with his team leading third home run, but the Baysox ran out of time to make a comeback against Trenton. Mother Nature once again made her presence felt as the game was called in the seventh inning, with Trenton coming out on top 10-8. It was the fourth time in as many nights the Baysox have failed to complete a game due to the inclement weather.
The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the first against Trenton starter Ivan Nova. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker walked with one out in the first inning and stole second for his fifth stolen base of the season. After designated hitter Paco Figueroa walked, first baseman Brandon Snyder reached on an infield single to load the bases for Dave Krynzel, making his first start since April 26 due to injury. Krynzel grounded out to third which plating Tucker and giving the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
The Baysox would add to their lead playing small ball to tally two more runs in the second. Third baseman Miguel Abreu singled to left field to start the inning, and moved to second on a groundout by catcher Guillermo Rodriguez. Second baseman Ryan Freel singled him home with a rocket back up the middle. Tucker followed with an infield single to put men on first and second with two out. With Figueroa at the plate, manager Brad Komminsk called for the double steal and both runners slid in safely without a throw. Later in the at-bat, Nova uncorked a wild pitch and Freel scored to put the Baysox up three.
The Baysox defense gave the Thunder extra opportunities against Baysox starter Jake Arrieta in the top of the third, as they came back to tie the score at three. Right fielder James Cooper started the inning off with a ground ball to short that Robert Valido threw away, putting the leadoff man on. It would prove to be costly, as later in the inning Jorge Vazquez took Arrieta deep for a three run homer with two outs. All three of the runs were unearned, and the Baysox have now allowed 16 unearned runs on the season.
Trenton broke the game wide open in the fourth as Arrieta struggled with his command. The Thunder scored six times on the young right-hander, who fell behind to five of the six men he faced in the inning before being replaced by James Hoey. Arrieta took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings while striking out four and walking three in addition to hitting a batter. It was his first start in ten days, and has also been bothered by a groin strain.
"There are really no excuses," said Arrieta of his performance. "I need to make some better pitches."
Krynzel and the Baysox looked to get back in it in the fifth. Figueroa walked to start the inning and stole second. One batter later, Krynzel drove a Nova fastball deep over the auxiliary wall in right field to bring the Baysox within four. It was Krynzel's third home run of the season, but the Baysox center fielder was just happy to be out in the field after being out with an injury.
"It definitely felt good to get back out there with the adrenaline pumping," Krynzel said of the layoff. "I got a good pitch and I handled it well."
After Trenton got another run across to increase the deficit to five, the Baysox answered back again with three runs in the bottom of the sixth off Thunder lefty Michael Dunn. Freel, Tucker and Figueroa all walked to start the inning before Brandon Snyder drilled a two run double off the third baseman's glove. Dave Krynzel followed with a walk to load the bases, as Trenton skipper Tony Franklin went to right-hander Josh Schmidt. The move paid off, as Schmidt induced Concepcion to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, which scored a run but took the momentum away from the Baysox. Abreu flied out to end the inning and the sky opened up, forcing the tarp crew onto the field.
The rainout was the Baysox sixth of the season, and tonight marked the first time since Saturday the Baysox took the field at Prince George's Stadium during what was supposed to be a seven game home stand. Many of the players remained in good spirits through the ordeal, laughing and joking with each other while trying to stay focused.
"As a group it helps our team gel a lot more," said Krynzel about the extended time off. "But it's hard to stay mentally tough and stay sharp out there."
The rain has certainly not caused the team to lose their competitive edge, as they find other ways to endure the wrath of Mother Nature.
"We've got a pretty good hearts tournament going on in here," joked Krynzel about his team's competitive nature.
The two teams look to avoid the rain tomorrow as they are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 11:05 a.m. LHP Troy Patton (2-0, 1.21) is slated to start game one for the Baysox against Trenton RHP Ryan Pope (1-1, 2.03). In game two, LHP Bobby Livingston (1-1, 3.57) takes the bump against RHP Alan Horne (0-1, 7.36).
