
Fisher Cats get solid starts, but fall twice in New Britain Wednesday night

New Britain, CT---Whit Robbins led off the last of the sixth inning with a solo home run, breaking a 2-2 tie, and New Britain went on to a 5-3 win and a sweep of the twi-night doubleheader on Wednesday night from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Rock Cats won the opener 2-0 before 3,029 at New Britain Stadium.
Robbins home run, his second of the season, came off New Hampshire reliever Bubbie Buzachero (0-1). The Rock Cats also added two more runs in the frame on a Brandon Roberts RBI double and an RBI single by Brian Dinkelman.
The Fisher Cats (15-11) threatened in the top of the seventh inning. Jonathan Diaz (1-for-3, RBI) singled and moved to second on a groundout by Bryan Kervin. Adam Calderone (1-for-2, R) walked before Brad Emaus delivered a two-out single to cut the deficit to 5-3. But closer Anthony Slama was able to get David Cooper to fly out to end the game.
The Fisher Cats opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Brian Jeroloman doubled, moved to third on a fielders choice grounder by Cody Haerther and scored on a fielders choice grounder by Diaz.
New Hampshire added a run in the top of the third inning. Calderone doubled and advanced to third when Brad Emaus reached on an error. Calderone scored on Cooper's sacrifice fly to give the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead.
The Rock Cats (12-13) broke through against New Hampshire starter Rey Gonzalez in the bottom of the third inning. Rene Tosoni and Brandon Roberts singled to start the inning. Brian Dinkelman's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up and Tosoni scored on a groundout by Steve Tolleson to cut the lead to 2-1.
New Britian tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tosoni reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole second. He moved up on a sacrifice by Roberts and scored on a Dinkelman (2-for-3, 2 RBI) double.
In the opener, the Rock Cats took a 1-0 lead in the last of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Erik Lis (2-for-3, HR, RBI) off starting and losing pitcher Luis Perez (2-3). It was his first home run of the season.
New Britain added a run in the last of the sixth inning when Lis reached on an infield single and scored on a double by Juan Portes.
Perez pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one.
Winning pitcher Cole Devries (2-1) pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out one. Rob Delaney pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Anthony Slama recorded his fourth save, pitching around a Jonathan Diaz single in the seventh.
Luis Sanchez went 3-for-4 for the Fisher Cats, who had seven hits to just four for New Britain.
The roadtrip concludes tomorrow morning at 10:35am in New Britain. RHP Brandon Magee (0-0, 7.36) goes for New Hampshire against New Britain RHP Jeff Manship (2-2, 4.85). The game can heard starting with the BayRing Communications pre-game show at 10:15am with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
