Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The first bit of sunshine in the past four days shined down in Norwich but unfortunately not of the bats of the Connecticut Defenders as the Reading Phillies held on to a 2-1 win Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium.
The R-Phils got out in front 2-0 in the third inning when they took advantage of a throwing error on Defenders starter, Brooks McNiven and an RBI double by RF-Michael Taylor to score CF-Quintin Berry, then watched their pitching control the remainder of the game.
Connecticut would manage just one run in the bottom of the sixth inning as 2B-Sharlon Schoop doubled with one out and LF-Bobby Felmy drove him in with an RBI single to center to trim the lead in half, 2-1 Reading.
Reading's starter, LHP-Antonio Bastardo (2-1) picked up his second win of the season tossing 5.1 innings allowing one earned run off of four hits, walked one and struck out a season high seven Defenders.
RHP-Brooks McNiven (0-2) turned in his longest outing of the year but unfortunately suffered the loss. McNiven fired six innings allowed two unearned runs off of four hits and struck out a season high five batters.
In the ninth, the Defenders would get the representing tying run aboard with a CF-Mike Mooney laser shot off the ankle of R-Phils closer, LHP-Sergio Escalona but Escalona would stay in and get 3B-David Maroul to groundout to third base to end the game. Escalona picked up his eighth save of the season by tossing two scoreless innings and striking out four.
Connecticut will look for the series split tomorrow when they send LHP- Jesse English (1-2) to the mound against the R-Phils RHP-Tyson Brummett (1-3). Catch all the action starting with the Defenders Pre-game Show at 6:20pm on the Defenders Flagship Station WICH 1310AM or online at ctdefenders.com.
