EL1 Trenton Thunder

In Search Of Homes For Homeless Dogs

May 6, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, are pleased to welcome NorthStar VETS as the title sponsor of the "Dog of the Day" promotion for the 2009 season. The program, now in its third season, will continue to raise awareness for homeless dogs by showcasing them at the ballpark during each game.

Over the last two seasons the "Dog of the Day" program has been incredibly successful in raising awareness and finding homes for homeless dogs. At all 71 Thunder home games, a different "Dog of the Day" is featured and given the chance to be adopted. The dog is paraded around the field in front of the crowd and a description of the potential pet is read over the public address system. Fans are invited to "meet" the dog in person or to pick up a flyer at the AAA Guest Services Center on the concourse. After the game, the dog's picture is posted on the "Dog of the Day" page on www.trentonthunder.com. The picture links to the shelter's website so people can learn more about that dog as well as others who are up for adoption.

While tracking the number of dogs adopted directly as a result of this initiative has been difficult, the Thunder believe that at least 20 "Dogs of the Day" have been adopted each year. The program is operating virtually the same in 2009 and through the first 12 games there has already been at least one success story.

"NorthStar VETS is proud to work with Trenton Thunder and area shelters to find good, loving homes for needy pets," said Brie D. Messier, Hospital Administrator at NorthStar VETS. "We consider it a privilege, and it warms our hearts, to give back to the community."

Local animal shelters that would like to participate in the Dog of the Day should contact program coordinator Patience Purdy at patience@trentonthunder.com or 609-394-3300 ext. 104.

NorthStar VETS began in 2000 as a mobile surgery practice and has evolved into the comprehensive referral center that it is today. NorthStar VETS, located in Clarksburg, NJ, strives to improve emergency, trauma and specialty care for companion animals. Find out more by visiting, www.northstarvets.com.

The Thunder have announced that all kids will eat for free at Waterfront Park all season long. All children with a ticket, ages 12 and under, will receive a voucher upon entering the ballpark good for a free hot dog, bag of potato chips and a 12 oz. fountain soda at all 71 Thunder home games this season.

Trenton is proud to host the 2009 Eastern League All Star Game on July 15th. Tickets are on sale now by calling 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.

The Thunder are the only team in Minor League Baseball history at the Double A Level or below to draw over 400,000 fans for 14 consecutive seasons and have draw over 6 million in attendance in its 15-year history.
