Rock Cats take doubleheader
May 6, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release
(Game 1: Rock Cats 2, New Hampshire 0)
New Britain, CT - Cole Devries hurled five shutout innings, Erik Lis delivered the offense along with a couple of sparkling plays at first, and the bullpen sealed the deal as the Rock Cats downed New Hampshire, 2-0 in the first game of Wednesday night's doubleheader.
Devries (2-1) scattered five hits and struck out two. He gave way to Robert Delaney, who allowed one hit in a scoreless sixth. Anthony Slama followed with a one-hit inning to close out the seven-inning game. Slama notched his fourth save.
Lis put the Rock Cats on the board with a blast over the right field wall to start off the fourth inning. In the previous inning, Lis had made two stabs at first base, including one that he tossed for Devries for the second out and another that he took care of himself to end the inning and brought a roar from the Rock Cats' dugout.
Juan Portes' double to center field in the sixth knocked in Lis from first. Lis barreled into the catcher at the plate and knocked the ball out of his glove.
For the Fisher Cats, Luis Perez (2-3) tossed six solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits in a complete game, but suffered the loss. Luis Sanchez led the way for New Hampshire with three hits.
(Game 2: Rock Cats 5, New Hampshire 3)
Whit Robbins crushed a homer to right field to complete a Rock Cats' comeback and Anthony Slama picked up his second save of the night as New Britain swept Wednesday's doubleheader with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
The Rock Cats, who battled back from a 2-0 deficit, scored on an RBI groundout by Steve Tolleson in the third that cut the lead, 2-1. Brian Dinkelman added an RBI double in the fifth that tied the game.
Robbins' home run in the sixth started off a three-run inning that put the game away. Brandon Roberts and Dinkelman both had RBI singles in the inning.
Rene Tosoni went 2-for-2 and scored three runs for the Rock Cats. Matthew Fox limited the Fisher Cats to two runs on two hits while striking out three through 5 1/3 innings. Fox came away with the no-decision as relief man Jose Lugo (2-2) picked up the win after retiring two batters in the sixth.
Slama struggled a bit in the seventh, allowing a leadoff single to Jonathon Diaz. He bounced back to retire the next two batters, but walked Adam Calderone. Brad Emaus then singled to left field to score Diaz before Slama forced David Cooper to line out to left field. Slama earned his second save of the day and fifth of the season.
Edward Buzachero (0-1) allowed four hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings in relief to suffer the loss.
