Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Trenton Thunder handed the Altoona Curve its fifth straight loss with a, 8-3, win over the Curve on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark. Derek Hankins (5-2), who was making his first start since May 22, suffered the loss for Altoona while Adam Warren (2-0) earned the win in his second Double-A start.
Trenton wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning. After Justin Christian was hit by a pitch and stole second, Austin Romine singled him in to make it, 1-0 Trenton.
Hankins battled out of the first and kept the Thunder off the board in the second but they struck with another run off the Illinois native in the third. Romine, who reached on a fielding error by Chase d'Arnaud to start the inning, came around to score on a Daniel Brewer RBI double to put Trenton up by a pair at 2-0.
After Trenton added one more in the fourth and chased Hankins from the game, Altoona found its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Josh Harrison led off the frame with a single, stole second and then was brought home by a Jordy Mercer single to cut the Thunder lead to, 3-1.
The two-run deficit would be as close as Altoona would come as Trenton added three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to open up an, 8-1, lead. Michael Colla, who was called up from High-A Bradenton on Wednesday, made his Double-A debut and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in 1.2 innings in relief of the starter Hankins. Michael Dubee worked the final 3.2 innings and did not allow a run.
Altoona did add two more runs in the eighth off Thunder reliever Cory Arbiso on a Harrison two-RBI double with two away. Harrison, Mercer and Miles Durham all had two hits apiece in the loss.
With the loss, Altoona has now dropped five straight games for the first time in 2010.
The Curve (57-40) and Thunder (58-40) will lock horns in game two of the four game series at 7 p.m. on Friday night at BCB. LHP Justin Wilson (7-5, 2.95) will look to lead the Curve to a victory while RHP D.J. Mitchell (7-4, 4.61) starts for Trenton.
The scheduled Friday night Curve hat giveaway will be delayed because the hats are part of a shipment that has been detained by U.S. Customs in Los Angeles, Ca. since July 11. Due to concerns about another segment of the shipment, Customs' review process has extended to the point where the Curve hats will not arrive in time for the giveaway event. In recognition of the inconvenience, the Curve and Success Promotions will provide the first 2,000 fans vouchers to redeem for the hats when the items arrive at Blair County Ballpark and baseball key chains as they arrive at the park on Friday. Kids can run the bases after Friday night's game with Trenton.
Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on flagship ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network. For tickets and more information on Friday night's game, visit www.AltoonaCurve.com, call 877.99.CURVE or stop by the box office at BCB.
