BOWIE, MD - Left-hander Clayton Tanner turned in seven sterling innings as the Richmond Flying Squirrels hung on for a, 3-2, victory over the Bowie Baysox in the opener of a four-game series at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday night.

The Squirrels caught a break to start the game and capitalized on it to take the lead. Nick Noonan led off the ballgame with a fly ball to left-center field. Tyler Henson, Bowie's left fielder, misplayed the fly and Noonan was able to advance to second base. Ryan Lormand bunted him to third and he scored for a 1-0 lead when Thomas Neal bounced out to the shortstop. The run was unearned and charged to Bowie left-hander Rick Zagone.

Tanner held the lead and the Baysox in check through four innings. However, they would tie the game with a run in the fifth. Danny Figueroa singled with one out and promptly swiped second base. He advanced to third on a wild-pitch from Tanner and scored to tie the game when Greg Miclat singled back up the middle.

Zagone worked himself into trouble in the sixth as the Squirrels grabbed the lead back. Zagone issued back-to-back two-out walks to Neal and Brandon Belt. Conor Gillaspie made them hurt when he ripped a single to right field to score Neal with the go-ahead run.

Zagone (1-2) departed after six innings. He surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on three hits. He walked three and struck out one as he endured the hard-luck loss.

The Squirrels again rallied with two outs against the Bowie bullpen in the seventh. With two outs and reliever Raul Rivero in the ballgame, Skyler Stromsmoe legged out an infield-single. Noonan followed and ripped a triple into the right-field corner to score Stromsmoe and stretch the Richmond advantage to 3-1.

Tanner (6-6) left in style, working a perfect seventh inning before calling it a night after seven solid innings. The left-hander allowed just a lone run on five hits. He walked one and struck out four to earn his sixth win of the season.

Bowie battled back to plate a run off of reliever Daniel Turpen in the eighth inning, creeping to within a run, 3-2. However, the Squirrrels held the lead to the ninth and right-hander Mitch Lively came on to retire the side in order for his second save of the season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Friday night at Prince George's Stadium. RHP Craig Westcott will make the start for Richmond against RHP Ryohei Tanaka for Bowie.
