Trenton Thunder News Release
(Norwich, CT)- Connecticut Starting pitcher Dave McKae went six solid innings to lead the Defenders past the Thunder 6-2 on Tuesday night from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Trenton had its five-game hitting streak snapped, and dropped to 4-7 on the season against Connecticut. Connecticut snapped its six-game losing streak with the win.
Connecticut (56-58) took a 1-0 in the first inning off of Thunder starting pitcher Steven White (0-1). The Defenders had three consecutive singles capped off by an RBI single from Catcher Pablo Sandoval. In the fourth inning, the Defenders tallied two more runs to increase the lead to 3-0. Center fielder Carlos Sosa had a fielder's choice RBI, and Second baseman Dave Maroul lifted a sacrifice fly RBI. White went 3 1/3 innings and gave up three hits and three runs (one earned run). He walked five and struck out one to take the loss.
Trenton (69-45) fought back in the sixth inning with two runs against McKae. Catcher Francisco Cervelli was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Designated hitter James Cooper then walked to put runners at first and second base. Thunder Shortstop Reegie Corona followed and delivered a two-run triple to cut the deficit to 3-2. But the Thunder stranded the tying run at third base, as Second baseman Kevin Russo grounded out, and Connecticut Right fielder Olmo Rosario threw out Corona at the plate for the final out of the inning. Corona tried to tag up on a fly out by Center fielder Austin Jackson. McKae (7-6) allowed only two hits and two runs in six innings to pick up the win.
Trenton had another great chance to score the tying run in the seventh inning, but Thunder First baseman Cody Ehlers grounded into a double play with runners at the corners and one out. Connecticut tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk by Designated hitter Adam Witter, and two runs in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Rosario.
Trenton and Connecticut will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium. RHP George Kontos (3-10) will start for Trenton against Connecticut LHP Ben Snyder (1-3, 8.44). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
