Luis Montanez of the Bowie Baysox is named the Eastern League's Player of the Month for July

Portland, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Bowie Baysox outfielder Luis Montanez has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of July. Montanez, who is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, had an outstanding month for the Baysox, hitting .352 (38-for-108) with six doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 29 RBI, 25 runs scored, 12 walks, one steal, a .408 on-base percentage and a .685 slugging percentage in 30 games during the month. The 26-year old reached base in all but four of the games he played in during the month and had 12 multiple hit games. If the season ended today, Luis would become the first winner of the Eastern League Triple Crown since the 1976 season, as he currently leads the league in home runs (26), RBI (97) and batting average (.335). In addition to those three categories, the 6'2", 200 lb. slugger is also currently ranked first in the league in runs scored (90), hits (151), extra-base hits (63), total bases (271), slugging percentage (.601), OPS (.986) and games played (116).
Montanez has continued his hot hitting into the month of August, as he is 10-for-17 (.588) with two home runs, 11 RBI and eight runs scored in four games during the month and he currently has a 19-game hitting streak, which is tied for the longest streak in the Eastern League this season. This is not the first award Luis has received this season, as he was also the winner of the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week Award for the weeks ending May 26th and August 3rd and was selected as a member of the Southern Division roster for the 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game.
Luis, who batted .339 (41-for-121) and scored 24 runs while playing in 31 games with the Baysox during the 2007 season, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a minor league free agent on November 14, 2006.
