Altoona Curve News Release

ALTOONA - In just his second Double-A start, right-hander Jared Hughes tossed six solid innings to halt the Curve's season-high losing streak at six games. The Curve played a solid game against the division's first-place club, the Akron Aeros, and grabbed a 4-3 on Tuesday night at Blair County Ballpark.

Shelby Ford paced the offense for Altoona with a 3-for-4 night, as the Curve second baseman drove in a pair of RBI's and scored two of the Curve's runs.

After the Curve fell behind early, 1-0, Ford scored Altoona's first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Jim Negrych, deadlocked the score, 1-1.

Ford then gave Altoona a lead they would not give up the rest of the night. In the bottom of the fifth inning, his RBI single brought home Steve Lerud to give the Curve a 2-1 edge.

Altoona would plate a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which proved to be huge. Ford tripled to right-center field to bring home Angel Gonzalez and later scored himself on a wild pitch to extend the Curve lead to 4-1.

Ronald Belisario was able to secure his sixth save of the season, but not after the Aeros threatened in the top of the ninth. Akron plated a pair of runs, but Belisario was able to get Bronson Sardinha to ground into a crucial 1-6-3 double play before Wes Hodges grounded out to end the game.

Hughes (1-1) struck out six batters for Altoona to notch the first win of his Curve career. The righty was called up from Lynchburg (Advanced-A) to fill the spot of Josh Hill, who was placed on the Disabled List.

Hughes defeated Frank Herrmann (9-5) who was the tough-luck loser, allowing a pair of runs over six innings.

The Curve will play the rubber match of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Righty Dan Reichert (1-2, 5.75) will take the hill for the Curve. Akron will give the ball to right-hander Steve Wright (2-1, 4.40).

Wednesday will be the last time that fans can see the Curve at BCB for a while. Altoona will hit the road for a season-long 11 game road trip on Thursday. The Curve won't return home until August 19.

On Wednesday, Curve legend Josh Bonifay will return to Blair County Ballpark to throw out a ceremonial first pitch, meet with fans and sign free autographs. Also the Curve will hold their first-ever "Train Wreck Series - Ode to Fallen Stars". Wednesday is also a Giant Eagle Advantage Card Night. By showing an Advantage Card at the BCB ticket windows, fans can buy one outfield reserve seat at regular price and receive a second one, free.

Great seats still remain for the final game of the homestand. For tickets, call 877-99-CURVE, log on to AltoonaCurve.com or stop by in person at the BCB box office.
