Anderson's Grand Slam Leads Rout of Reading, 13-3 Tuesday Night

(Reading, PA)-Lars Anderson's first-inning grand slam sparked the Sea Dogs (61-51) to a 13-3 victory over the Reading Phillies (47-69) Tuesday night. With the victory, the Dogs move to 2-0 on the road trip and have won five of six meetings with the Phillies.

Portland wasted no time in jumping out to a big early lead Tuesday. Facing recently-demoted big leaguer Adam Eaton (0-1), the first three batters of the game reached base on a walk, an error, and a hit batter. Enpro Services clean-up hitter Mark Wagner then stroked a single to right field to drive in Mickey Hall. And before fans were even settle into their seats, Lars Anderson hit a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Dogs a 5-0 lead five batters into the game. Anderson's homerun was his second of the series and his second in Double-A.

Portland would add to their run total with the first two batters of the second inning. Iggy Suarez drew a lead-off walk before Mickey Hall lofted his 8th homerun of the season over the right field wall for a 7-0 Sea Dogs lead. That homer highlighted a good night for Hall, who also singled, walked three times, drove in three, and scored twice.

The early run support made things easy for starting pitcher Ryne Lawson. The 23-year-old right-hander earned the victory, working five solid innings in his Double-A debut. Lawson allowed three runs, two earned, all coming in the second inning. Phillies' SS Brad Harman delivered a bases-loaded, 2-run single. Two batters later, Javon Moran scored when ‘Dogs 3B Jorge Jimenez dropped a pop-up on the infield off the bat of Jeremy Slayden.

Portland's offense would add runs in the 5th, 6th, and 9th innings. Anderson and Aaron Bates had back-to-back two-out doubles in the 5th. In the 6th, Zach Daeges just missed a grand slam, driving in Argenis Diaz on a sacrifice fly to deep center field. In the 9th, the Dogs scored four runs on three consecutive run-scoring singles and a bases-loaded walk to Hall. With that 9th inning surge, every Sea Dogs starter scored a run.

Anderson finished the game 2-4 with 4 rbi's and 3 runs scored. He's now driven in 5 runs in the series and has 10 rbi's in his last six starts. He also extended his hitting streak to six games, batting a sparkling .478 (11-23) during the run. Diaz added three hits to extend his hitting streak to a season-best seven games.

The Sea Dogs and Phillies will wrap up their season series Wednesday night. The ‘Dogs have yet to name their starting pitcher. RHP Andrew Carpenter (3-7, 6.35) will get the ball for Reading. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Radio coverage begins at 6:40pm on the US Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network.

Notes: Daeges' sac fly gave him 17 rbi's since July 25th, but his 4-game hitting streak came to an end...Jimenez' hitting streak ends at 7 games...Lawson is the 3rd Sea Dogs pitcher to earn the win in his Double-A debut in 2008 (Chad Rhoades and Dustin Richardson.)...Bullpen extended scoreless streak to 11.1 innings in series...Dogs were 6-12 with runners in scoring position...Reading was 1-13 with RISP.
