Trenton Thunder News Release
Erie, PA- A grand slam and three-run homer from Brandon Laird lifted the Thunder late in the game, and Trenton came from behind to beat Erie 11-2 on Thursday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. With the win, the Thunder improve to 44-27.
After the Thunder scored a combined 20 runs in the first two games of the series, they had no answer through the first four innings against RHP Anthony Shawler. The right-hander made his first start of the year and struck out five batters over the first four frames. Erie took a 1-0 lead off RHP Hector Noesi (4-1) in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Michael Bertram doubled in Cale Iorg, who led off the inning with a single. The SeaWolves struck again in the sixth, as Alden Carrithers led off the frame with a double and scored on an RBI single by Andy Dirks, and Erie had a 2-0 lead at the end of six innings.
Off RHP Cory Hamilton and LHP Jay Voss (1-2) in the seventh inning, Trenton scored seven runs on three hits, as Voss walked in the game-tying and go-ahead runs. Laird stepped up with the bases loaded and hit his second grand slam of the season over the center field wall, and Trenton took a 7-2 lead heading into the ninth.
Trenton picked up four more runs in the top of the ninth inning off Voss. Austin Romine drove in Justin Snyder, who doubled to right field to lead off the inning. With Daniel Brewer at second base and Romine at first, Laird hit his second home run of the game to right field. He now has 18 home runs and 76 RBI in 71 games played in 2010.
Tim Norton and Wilkins Arias pitched an inning each in relief, combining to strike out four.
Trenton returns home to Waterfront Park and will open up a series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 7:05 PM on Friday night. The Thunder have yet to announce a starting pitcher. New Hampshire will throw RHP Zach Stewart.
